Amazon investing in workforce development with employee education program

HEBRON – A growing worldwide company, which operates a number of facilities in Kentucky, is taking it upon themselves to better educate their workers, either for career advancement, or movement into another field.
Since 2012, Amazon initiated the Amazon Career Choice program in which the company will pay 95 percent of the costs for their hourly employees, who have been with the company at its fulfillment centers for at least one year, to take college level courses related to in-demand fields.
Amazon spokesperson Nina Lindsey, says that while many employees are looking to advance their careers at Amazon, a number are looking to get into different fields.
“Our associates are pursuing fields such as health and sciences, healthcare information, technology, medical billing and coding, they’re pursuing a wide variety of different courses all through the career choice program,” Lindsey said.
Rep. Addia Wuchner, R-Florence, sees the initiative as an economic development tool for the commonwealth.
“You know, when you look at companies that are committed to an educated workforce, and they’re not just committed to education in their line, it helps all the way around because we can attract more businesses, more companies, to northern Kentucky because we’ll have an educated across the board workforce,” Wuchner said.
Currently, Amazon is offering on-site classes at their Hebron, Campbellsville, and Jeffersonville, Indiana fulfillment centers. However, employees at other locations around the state have the opportunity to take classes online or at local colleges and universities.
