Adkins says family is on board for gubernatorial run; Decision in the "very near future"

FRANKFORT — Democrats who ran successfully in 2015 essentially ran for two-years before the election; this year there are names floating and so far no one has declared their candidacy, but that could soon change.

One potential candidate, House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, says a decision from him could be imminent. The 31-year member of the House of Representatives is being mentioned as a potential candidate along with Attorney General Andy Beshear, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and former state Auditor Adam Edelen.

Adkins says his family is ready to take on the challenge of running for the currently Republican held Governor’s mansion.

“We are giving this very serious consideration, and we’ll be making a decision on that in the very near future,” Adkins said, responding to a question from Pure Politics. “I’ll also say this, my focus is also on November of this year; concentrating my effort across Kentucky on different House races for our members — to give it every ounce of effort I’ve got to take back the Kentucky House and I’m very optimistic we can do that.”

If Adkins jumps into the Democratic field, he may need to start earlier than some of the other candidates in an effort to build statewide name identification, and monetary base.

Adkins was very active in recruiting candidates which can help him build a base of support, but overall Adkins says he’s not concerned with building his brand around the state — because he has been in public service for so long.

Kentucky law mandates candidates declaring their candidacy for governor to also name a running mate before they can raise money and start their campaign.

Rumors are abundant about potential slates being formed behind the scenes, but Adkins said so far those conversations have not taken place with him.

Rocky Rocky he’s our man, if he can do it absolutely anybody can. Governor Adkins would make Greg Stumbo his chief of staff and within two months Rocky would be trailing Greg around like a puppy because old habits die hard.
