BOWLING GREEN – Democratic House Speaker Pro Tem Jody Richards is facing off against Republican Melinda Hill, a Bowling Green city commissioner, and says that his experience affords him the opportunity to further benefit his Warren County region, while Hill says that it’s time for new blood as Richards seeks his twenty-first term in office.
Hill, who once served as a page for Richards, says that she will bring new ideas and a new way of looking at things to the job.
“I tell people, imagine yourself on the first week on a new job, how you want to make sure every I is dotted and every t is crossed, that’s how I will be new to the state House of Representatives,” Hill said. “After you’ve been in anything for a certain period of time, you start taking it for granted, and you may not look at things like you once did.”
Richards says that his 40 years worth of experience has allowed him to secure a lot of state dollars for projects in the region.
“We have led the state in industrial development 10 years in a row, our growth is phenomenal,” Richards said. “It’s really important to be able to be in the legislature a while to make the connections, to understand how it’s done, to know the people in LRC, and to know the major players around the state. It’s not one of those things where you go in and make changes immediately.”
Richards is not concerned about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s expected poor performance in Warren County affecting his numbers, as he states that President Barack Obama did poorly in Warren County in 2008 and 2012 while he won his elections handily.
According to the latest Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, Richards has raised $74,322.49, while spending $44,040.24, while Hill has raised $49,244.35, and spent $11,491.99.
