2015 filing update: Rep. Glenn files for treasurer, Rep. Heath to run for agriculture commissioner

As the clock winds down on the deadline to enter the 2015 primary elections more candidates, including two sitting lawmakers, filed paperwork to run statewide on Monday.

Rep. Jim Glenn, an Owensboro Democrat who has been a target for the GOP in recent election cycles because of slim victories in recent re-elections to the state House, will try his hand statewide.

Glenn filed first thing Monday, and he pointed to his time in front of students working on financial literacy as a reason for his state treasurer campaign.

“I’ve spent my career in the classroom teaching students how to start and run a business and how to better handle their personal finances. As a state representative, I sponsored The Kentucky Financial Literacy Commission Bill (HB 233) which passed in the House 94-0 on February 7, 2014, which would have made financial literacy mandatory in Kentucky schools,” Glenn said.

“As state treasurer, I will use the office as a platform to make sure our families and children have the financial literacy background that they need to succeed.”

Glenn joins five other candidates for the office including two familiar names. Rep. Rick Nelson, D-Middlesboro, and former state Rep. Richard Henderson, D-Mt. Sterling, who lost re-election in the fall.

Louisville Democrat Neville Blakemore has also filed for treasurer.

Glenn is not the only elected official running statewide or filing on Monday. State Rep. Richard Heath, R-Mayfield, filed to run for agriculture commissioner, setting up a primary against state Rep. Ryan Quarles, R-Georgetown.

Heath filed his paperwork with minutes left on the clock Monday before the close of business.

Democrat Jean-Marie Lawson Spann is the lone Democrat to file for agriculture commissioner so far.

Candidates have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to file for this year’s elections.
