Women's SEC Tournament Begins

The women’s SEC tournament kicks off tonight at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia between Mississippi State and Alabama, but UK Hoops will wait until Friday to take the court, since the Wildcats earned a bye as the number two seed.
“We’d love to go cut down the nets in Duluth,” head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “The champion always has to play really good basketball over the course of several days, so it would really be honor for us to win it.”
Kentucky will play the winner of Missouri-Vanderbilt game. UK Hoops notched a win over both Mizzou and Vandy in the regular season, winning by a combined margin of 144-96.
Two weeks ago, UK Hoops stumbled on the road against LSU losing 77-72. After that loss, the team refocused and won their last two games by an average of 19 points. Mitchell said he hopes the team can carry that mindset into the SEC tournament.
“This team needs to be very, very serious about going down there with the intention to win because… this is a championship caliber team and they missed out on that regular season title,” Mitchell said. “I think for us to get beat at LSU, come back, examine some things and give the bench a little more responsibility has been positive and will really help us in the tournament too.”
Kentucky closed out the regular season with a huge win over No. 8 Tennessee, beating the Volunteers 78-65, due in big part to the Wildcats’ strong defensive presence.
“The defense was extremely disruptive. That can be a real weapon for us,” Mitchell said. “I just thought the players were able to rise to the occasion. That’s really important this weekend. We need to go down there with the correct mindset and really really try to play some good basketball and see if we can win this tournament.”
