LEXINGTON — Alex Poythress turned back the clock to get the No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats (8-1) back on track, scoring a season-high 21 points to power UK to an 88-67 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night at Rupp Arena.
Poythress finished just one point shy of his career high, scored 20+ points for the first time since his freshman year in 2012-13, and snagged 13 rebounds to post his third double-double in the last six games.
After managing just 28 points in the paint in its first loss of the season at UCLA last weekend, Kentucky dominated the post against EKU.
UK’s first 17 field goals all came in the painted area as the Cats built a 50-36 halftime lead. Kentucky finished the night shooting 55% from the field (35/64) and doubled up the Colonels on the glass (50-25) to secure its eighth win of the year.
EKU (7-3) entered the game shooting 44% from distance on the season — good for sixth best in the nation — but managed to only hit 5/18 of its three-point attempts against Kentucky (28%).
Junior forward Marcus Lee returned to the court for the first time since suffering a head injury against UCLA, scoring 11 points on a perfect shooting night, finishing 5/5 from the field and 1/1 at the foul line.
Freshman guard Jamal Murray added 16 points for Big Blue — one of five in double figures — while sophomore Tyler Ulis pitched in nine points and a game-high eight assists.
Next up for the Wildcats is home tilt against Arizona State on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. ET at Rupp Arena with game broadcasts available on ESPN, WatchESPN.com, and through the WatchESPN app.
