Top-ranked Mississippi State remains undefeated after a 45-31 win over Kentucky, but the Cats certainly put a scare into the Bulldogs and perhaps the rest of the SEC.
The nation’s number one team arrived with a high-powered offense led by Heisman candidate Dak Prescott, and they did not disappoint. But for nearly every MSU touchdown scored, UK had a response.
Patrick Towles led the way for the Kentucky offense, throwing for 390 yards and a two touchdown passes. And not to be outdone by Prescott, UK’s sophomore quarterback added an additional 76 yards and two scores on the ground.
The Cats trailed for the majority of the game, but Towles cut the deficit to seven when he powered his way into the end zone with 2:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, the ensuing onside kick would end any prospects of an upset. Christian Holmes returned the kick for a 61-yard touchdown, and Mississippi State sealed the win.
The Bulldogs were paced by running back Josh Robinson, who carried the ball 23 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
MSU improves to 7-0 (4-0 SEC), while UK falls to 5-3 (2-3). Next up is a road trip to Missouri, where the Cats will be put to the test by the 6-2 Tigers.
