Following last week’s season-opening loss to Western Kentucky, Mark Stoops said he wanted to more excitement from his team. Fans walked away wanting more of the “Air Raid” offense. Both parties walked away from Commonwealth Stadium happy today as UK rolled Miami (Ohio) 41-7 in their home opener, giving Stoops his first career head coaching victory.
Despite starting the game with Max Smith under center, it was Jalen Whitlow who scored the team’s first points, getting into the end zone on a 9-yard run less than two minutes into the game. The Cats would open up a 17-0 lead on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jonathon George before Darryl Collins fumbled a punt, giving the Redhawks a touchdown. But, on the ensuing possession, Smith connected with Javess Blue on an 88-yard touchdown pass, giving the Cats a 24-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. From there, UK would add another score on a 5-yard run by Raymond Sanders and a 56-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jeff Badet in the 4th quarter.
Smith finished the game 15/23 for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Jalen Whitlow was 10/12 for 103 yards. Freshman Jojo Kemp led the rushing attack with 78 yards on 12 carries while Whitlow added 48 on 7 carries and Raymond Sanders racked up 39 yards on 6 carries.
