Fresh off Sunday’s win in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game, Kentucky received the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament and will play the winner of the No. 16 seed play-in game between Manhattan/Hampton on Thursday in Louisville.
Joining UK in the Midwest Region is Kansas as the No. 2 seed, Notre Dame as the No. 3 seed, and Maryland at the No. 4 seed.
The Manhattan Jaspers won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament and finished the season 19-13 while the Hampton Pirates posted a 16-17 mark after winning the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament to earn an automatic bid into the Big Dance.
Though there have been a few close calls over the years, a No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16 seed in the men’s tournament.
Presumably, after Kentucky wins on Thursday, it will advance to play the winner of the 8/9 game between Cincinnati and Purdue on Saturday. UK was a No. 8 seed in last year’s NCAA tournament and advanced all the way to the national championship game before losing to 7-seed University of Connecticut.
