They didn’t stop fighting until the very end, but the Kentucky women’s basketball team came up short against Ohio State, falling 82 to 68 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
This is the third straight season the Wildcats have been eliminated from the NCAA tournament at home.
Ohio State had a commanding 19-point lead early in the third quarter, but UK wouldn’t stop fighting and would come within one point in the closing minutes of the game. Key turnovers down the stretch hurt the Wildcats as they tried to take the lead.
Kentucky only shot 34 percent (25-73 FG) from the floor and committed 12 turnovers. Ohio State had 22 points off the bench, while Kentucky only had eight.
The Buckeyes were led by Kelsey Mitchell, who had 21 points. But the most valuable player for the Buckeyes may have been former Wildcat Linnae Harper. Harper finished the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Makayla Epps and Evelyn Akhator played their hearts out in their final game at Kentucky. Epps scored 21 points, while Akhator 14 points and grabbed a career-high 23 rebounds. Her 23 rebounds are the most in NCAA tournament history. The previous record was 14.
Kentucky finishes the season with a 22-11 record.
