They say they want to be the fastest team in the nation and UK Hoops certainly looked the part in their first and only exhibition game Thursday night as they scored the most points in school history. The 141-63 win over Pikeville eclipsed last year’s 133 points scored against Baylor in quadruple overtime.
Matthew Mitchell’s eighth season as head coach of the UK women’s basketball team started in classic Mitchell fashion as the team forced 19 first-half turnovers and converted 22 points. The team forced 37 total turnovers and finished the game shooting 48 of 89 from the field (63%).
Senior guard Jennifer O’Neill and freshman forward Alexis Jennings each scored 20 points, while sophomore Makayla Epps led the team with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. The story of the game though was the return of sophomore Kyvin Goodin-Rogers, who started her first career game after sitting out all of last season with a heart condition.
After the game, Matthew Mitchell talked about being proud of his team’s attitude and effort.
UK Hoops gets the regular season started next Friday against Appalachian State at Memorial Coliseum. The game will air on SEC Network.
