UK Hoops hangs on to beat Belmont 73-70

The Kentucky women’s basketball team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, beating Belmont 73 to 70 this afternoon at Memorial Coliseum.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start, taking an early 10-point lead over Belmont in the first quarter. Things changed in the second quarter, as Belmont caught fire and went into the half with a 36-35 lead. Kentucky opened up the third quarter on a 13-0 run and shot 81 percent from the floor in the period. The Cats had a six point lead going into the fourth quarter. The lead was seven points with 1:25 to go when Belmont scored two quick buckets to pull within three with under a minute. Maci Morris hit some clutch free throws as the Wildcats avoided the upset.

Makayla Epps led the way for Kentucky with 30 points (11-18 FG), five rebounds and two assists. Evelyn Akhator added 22 points (9-15 FG) and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Maci Morris had 15 points (3-9 FG), four assists and three rebounds.

Kentucky’s defense forced Belmont to commit 13 turnovers. The Wildcats scored 19 points off of those turnovers. UK will face the winner of Ohio State vs. Western Kentucky on Sunday.
