The UK Hoops team got their postseason started on the right foot Thursday night, beating Vanderbilt 67-61 at the SEC Tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The 11th-ranked Wildcats, seeded #6 in the SEC Tournament, started the game just they way Mitchell had hoped after an upset win over #2 South Carolina last week, taking a 16-2 lead behind Linnae Harper’s 10 points. But the Commodores fought their way back and took a one-point lead into the half.
Thanks to solid bench play (31 points), 15 forced turnovers and 16 second-half points from Jennifer O’Neill, the Cats were able to take control most of the second half and walk away with a 67-61 win. O’Neill finished with 19 points, while Harper finished with 18. Azia Bishop’s two blocks moved her into fifth-most in a single season for UK, while Bria Goss went 2-2 from the free throw line, giving her 22-straight made free throws. That’s sixth-most in program history.
UK Hoops will return to the court Friday against Mississippi State, the 11th-seed in the SEC Tournament, at 9:30m. They beat the Bulldogs in double overtime on February 12.
