John Calipari tried to tell everyone that his team wasn’t quite ready for high-level competition and they proved him right in the first half of Friday’s season-opener against Utah Valley. Kentucky trailed by nine, 34-25, at the half before using their defense to create offense and walking away with a 73-63 win.

The Cats struggled on both ends of the floor in the first half, looking like the young group that they are and often looked a step slow against the veteran Utah Valley team. But a commitment on the defensive end, which included a 2-3 zone look, finally gave the Cats a spark and they pulled away for the win.

Freshman guard Hamidou Diallo led the way with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Nick Richards and Kevin Knox also scored in double figures.

Kentucky returns to the floor Sunday at Rupp Arena for a game with Vermont.
