John Calipari said he was expecting a test from Illinois State, a team who gave Maryland a run earlier this season, and that’s exactly what his team got Monday night at Rupp Arena.
The Cats struggled at the free throw line and had trouble keeping Illinois State off the glass in the first half and entered the break tied with the Redbirds, 31-31, before breaking away in the second half and holding on for a 12-point win.
The Cats were without point guard Tyler Ulis, who sat out as he recovers from an elbow injury, and got almost no contribution from freshman big man Skal Labissiere, who finished the game with 2 points and 2 rebounds. Stepping up in their place were Isaiah Briscoe, who finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and Marcus Lee, who recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards. Freshman guard Jamal Murray shot only 3 of 9, but finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds.
UK returns to action Thursday in Los Angeles against UCLA.
