UK FOOTBALL | Wildcats not worried about Florida streak, focused on improving to 3-0 for the season

LEXINGTON — Another week, another chance for the Kentucky Wildcats to finally, mercifully snap another long losing streak.

After ending their 22-game road losing skid with a 26-22 victory over South Carolina on Saturday, the Cats now turn their focus to the Florida Gators — a team UK has not defeated in 28 very long years.

  • “It’s been mentioned, no doubt,” quarterback Patrick Towles said about the Florida losing streak after Wednesday night’s practice. “It’s apparent. I’d be lying to you if I stood here and told you we’re not thinking about it, it’s not at the back of my head, but it’s not our prime focus. Our focus is about going 3-0.”

A win on Saturday would cement Kentucky’s first 3-0 start since 2010 when the Wildcats defeated Louisville, Western Kentucky, and Akron to kick off the season before losing to — Guess Who? — Florida in Week 4.

But this year is 2015, and the UK players are not focused on teams of the past but rather on the players who will actually take the field at what should be a raucous Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.

  • “We’re playing the Florida Gators of 2015 against the Kentucky Wildcats of 2015,” Towles said. “We’re not the same football team we were 10 years ago, 15 years ago, or 20 years ago. We’re excited, and if we’re the team to stop the streak, I wouldn’t be mad about it; I can promise you that.”
  • “This is this year, and we’re looking forward to another chance and another opportunity to go against a great Florida team,” sophomore running back Stanley “Boom” Williams said. “We know those guys are going to come ready to play, and they’re a good football team. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

UK almost ended the streak last season in a 36-30 triple-overtime heartbreaker in Gainesville, but the extra boost the Wildcats received after winning at South Carolina last weekend has increased confidence in pulling off the long-awaited Florida victory on Saturday.

  • “It means a lot,” said Towles. “We erased a big one last week [at South Carolina], and it would be great to do that again when we chalk it up [against Florida] on Saturday.”
