Kentucky opened SEC play in South Carolina against a Gamecock coming off season-opening wins against NC State and Missouri. UK could not have gotten off to a worse start, giving up a 68 yard touchdown to USC junior wideout Deebo Samuel on the first play from scrimmage.

But after that the Kentucky Defense was the star of the game holding the Gamecocks scoreless until late in the fourth quarter as UK left Columbia with a 23-13 victory.

UK gave South Carolina a healthy dose of Benny Snell as the sophomore carried 32 times for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Stephen Johnson was 16-25 for 169 yards and 1 INT but it was his legs that put the game away. In the fourth quarter, as UK was clinging to a 7 point lead and facing a 3rd and 8 from their own 38 yard line, Johnson scrambled for 54 yards down to the USC 10 yard line eventually setting up a 21 yd field goal from Austin McGinnis.

Kentucky starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2010 under then 1st year head coach Joker Phillips. Next up for the Cats is a home date with Florida Gators who are coming off a last second victory over Tennessee. Game time is set for 7pm at Kroger Field in Lexington
