Aggressive. Tough. Physical. Bunch of athletes. Typical Florida team.
Those are the terms UK head coach Mark Stoops kept cycling through as he previewed the Wildcats’ upcoming game against Florida. But with a higher level of competition, Stoops and the Wildcats will use this game as a measuring stick.
“I’m anxious. I want to have a great week of preparation. I want us just as excited to go down there as we were the first two weeks at home,” Stoops said. “I think it’s no mystery that it’s important to win games and compete at a high level in the SEC. We aren’t going to back away from that.”
To find success in the swamp, Stoops said on defense the Wildcats need to be more disciplined and do a better job of communicating. On offense, quarterback Patrick Towles needs to go through his progressions better and maybe not run the ball as much as he did last weekend against Ohio.
“I don’t think we want to be in the business of going down to the swamp and running him 22 times,” Stoops said. “He will run it, but we don’t want that. I thought he made some good decisions and that helped us at times, but he has to learn to go through his progressions better.”
Stoops and the Wildcats have already matched last year’s win total, but to keep the ball rolling and get their first win against Florida since 1986, they will have to create turnovers, according to Stoops.
“It’s the most critical statistic to us. We are not good enough to win the game on any one side,” Stoops said. “We have to play well on all sides to win. The competition is going to get harder, but we’re better.”
