It has begun.
The UK basketball team’s march toward a ninth national championship and NCAA immortality began in a big, if not largely expected, way, blowing the doors off of Pikeville College, 116-68.
Freshman Karl-Anthony Towns was the star with a team-high 23 points and sophomore guard Andrew Harrison was his co-headliner, dishing out 9 assists, but the balance of the platooning roster is what stood out most.
Thirteen players saw time on the floor for John Calipari and ten of those players, who made up his two platoons, finished with between 16 and 20 minutes. The starting lineup of Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison, Alex Poythress, Towns and Willie Cauley-Stein was relieved by a secondary unit of Tyler Ulis, Devin Booker, Trey Lyles, Marcus Lee and Dakari Johnson.
Booker finished the game with 16 points, while Johnson (13), Poythress (12), Lyles (11) and Cauley-Stein (10) also reached double-digits. Johnson, Lyles and Lee all finished with a team-high 8 rebounds.
Be sure to watch KSTV Monday to hear from John Calipari and the players following Sunday night’s win.
