LEXINGTON — Five-star power forward Wenyen Gabriel announced his commitment to John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday morning, becoming UK’s third commit for 2016.
Gabriel, the No. 10 player in the nation according to Scout.com, revealed his decision on ESPN.com, choosing the Wildcats over Duke, Maryland, UConn, and Providence.

“I felt a connection to all the coaches in my final five, but ultimately, it came down to Duke and Kentucky,” Gabriel said after picking UK, “and I just felt like I couldn’t go wrong either way.”
The 6-10 power forward took an official visit to Kentucky last weekend before hosting Blue Devils’ head coach Mike Krzyzewski at his school — Wilbraham And Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Massachussetts — on Tuesday night.
Gabriel had also scheduled to visit Duke later this month but cancelled after being sold on Calipari and Kentucky.
“Kentucky made it clear that they had a plan for me personally,” Gabriel said, “and for helping me to take my game to the next level.”
Gabriel becomes the third member of Kentucky’s 2016 recruiting class, joining four-star power forward Sacha Killeya-Jones, who committed to the Wildcats in August, and New Zealand power forward Tai Wynyard, who plans to join the team midway through the 2015-16 season.
Gabriel’s commitment also jumps Kentucky into the No. 2 spot in Scout.com’s 2016 rankings, behind only No. 1 Duke.

It’s another good recruiting start for Kentucky, the school that topped Duke in 2015 for the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation for the sixth time in seven years.
