Despite 33 points from Jamal Murray, Ohio State led most of the game, including the very end when zeros were on the scoreboard, as the Buckeyes upset 4th ranked Kentucky 74-67.
The Cats trailed by as much as 16 with around 11 minutes to go, when Big Blue started a big comeback. Many of the baskets were made by Murray who finished with 27 in the second half. UK was able to chop the lead down to three late in the contest, but the key turning point occurred with 2:56 to go, when Tyler Ulis was called for an intentional foul. Ohio State’s Kam Williams made a pair of free throws, and the Buckeyes also got the ball back. After that Kentucky could never get any closer.
Ulis finished with 11, while Marcus Lee, off the bench, finished with a dozen points, and nine rebounds. Ohio State had four players in double figures led by Keita Bates-Diop who had 14.
With the loss, Kentucky falls to 9-2 while the Buckeyes improve to 6-5. The Cats will have a week to think about things, and then take their frustrations out on Louisville. The annual Battle of the Bluegrass is next Saturday in Lexington with a Noon tip off.
Louisville is 9-1 after their victory this afternoon over Western Kentucky 78-56, although the Cards did lose one of their main players. Junior Forward Mangok Mathiang broke a bone in his foot and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks.
