UK BASKETBALL | No Help for Murray as Cats Fall To Vanderbilt
02/27/2016 06:56 PM
Jamal Murray continued his hot shooting today draining 6 three pointers on his way to 33 points but, unfortunately for the Kentucky Wildcats, he got no help from his teammates as UK dropped to a tie for first place in the SEC after losing to Vandy 74-62 in Nashville.
Vanderbilt’s stingy defense forced UK to find someone other than Murray or Ulis to beat them and no one stepped up. Isaac Humphries totaled zero points and one rebound. Skal totaled zero points and one rebound. Alex Poythress zero points and three rebounds. Charles Matthews zero points and four rebounds. At the end of the day there was just no one who could take the pressure off UK’s back court.
The road doesn’t get any easier for Kentucky (21-8, 11-5) as the travel to Gainsville to face Florida on Tuesday night. That game will be televised by ESPN.
Odds and Ends
Jamal Murray’s first three pointer of the game continued his streak of consecutive games with a made 3. That is good enough for third place on the Kentucky all time list. Tony Delk is in first place with a three pointer made in 34 consecutive games.
Murray’s 33 points was the second highest scoring output for a UK freshman. Tying him with…Jamal Murray. Murray tallied 33 back in December against Ohio State. The most points scored by a freshman was 35. That feat was done by Terrence Jones back in 2011 and, you guessed it, Jamal Murray against Florida on February 6th.
Tyler Ulis’ double-double streak came to and end against Vandy. He had tallied five straight and has six for the season. Back in 1969-1970 UK center Dan Issel totaled 25 double-doubles in just 28 games.
