Coming off a heart-breaking loss to Texas A&M on Saturday, and the images of a unbelievably swollen ankle to starting forward Derek Willis, the Wildcats finally got some good news as Alex Poythress had been cleared to play against Alabama.
Tonight’s game was the first action the senior forward has seen since February 2nd when he dropped 14 points in a loss at Tennessee. It looks like he hasn’t missed a beat as he again tossed in 14 points but with much better results as UK cruised to a 78-53 victory.
Kentucky (21-7, 11-4) put the clamps down on Alabama holding the Crimson Tide to just 35% from the field while outrebounding Bama 41-29. Retin Obasohan was the lone bright spot for Alabama and the one player that UK could not contain. Obasohan finished with 29 of his team’s 53 points.
After the game Alabama head coach Avery Johnson said “We just didn’t have it tonight. Our opponent was 20 points better than us tonight.”
The birthday boy, Jamal Murray, led Kentucky in scoring again tonight finishing with 23 points and 4 rebounds. And what is becoming a consistent theme, Tyler Ulis finished with his sixth double-double of the season scoring 19 points and handing out 10 assists.
Tonight’s game saw a much more balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats. Marcus Lee finished with 6 points & 12 boards. Isaiah Briscoe chipped in 10 points, 4 rebounds and an assist. Poythress had 14 and Humphries tossed in 4 points for UK.
Kentucky starts a two game road trip this Saturday as the head to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt. Then next week is a trip to Florida before returning home next Saturday to close out the regular season against LSU.
