UK BASKETBALL | Another race between Kentucky and Duke for the No. 1 class of 2016

LEXINGTON — Scout.com updated its 2016 recruiting class rankings this week, and a notable name was absent from the top five:
The University of Kentucky.
John Calipari and the Cats checked in at No. 8 overall behind its two current commitments: No. 29 Sacha Killeya-Jones and four-star New Zealand forward Tai Wynyard, who may not end up being a member of the 2016 class since he plans on enrolling at UK as soon as he graduates form high school to possibly join the 2015-16 team by late December.
The No. 1 team in the class is UK’s recruiting rival, the Duke Blue Devils.
After already landing the No. 3 prospect of 2016 in Jayson Tatum, Mike Krzyzewski secured another gem in No. 17 Frank Jackson this week to jump the Blue Devils up to the top spot.
The rest of the 2016 top 10 is listed below:
- 1. Duke Blue Devils
- 2. UCLA Bruins
- 3. Florida State Seminoles
- 4. Connecticut Huskies
- 5. Virginia Cavaliers
- 6. Washington Huskies
- 7. Michigan State Spartans
- 8. Kentucky Wildcats
- 9. Syracuse Orange
- 10. Oklahoma Sooners
But if this offseason taught us anything, it’s that you can never count out Calipari and Kentucky.
After missing out on several big names early in the summer, UK signed top players Jamal Murray (No. 12), Isaac Humphries (No. 50), and junior college All-American Mychal Mulder to sneak in and pass Duke to claim the No. 1 class of 2015 — UK’s sixth top class in seven years.
Evan Daniels, Scout.com’s director of basketball recruiting, told KSTV on Wednesday that he expects nothing less than another UK vs. Duke battle to claim No. 1 in 2016.
“I think Duke and Kentucky, when it’s all said and done, are really going to battle it out for the top two spots.”
