UK Baseball | Wildcats take care of Bobcats in opening regional game

The Kentucky baseball team won their opening regional game this afternoon, beating the Ohio Bobcats 6 to 4. Nearly 4,000 fans packed Cliff Hagan Stadium for the afternoon action.

Kentucky opened up the scoring in the first inning off of back-to-back singles from Luke Becker and Riley Mahan. Up 2-0 in the fourth, Mahan singled in Evan White to extend the lead to 3-0. He finished the game 3-5 with two RBIs.

Tristan Pompey would bring home Tyler Marshall in the fifth inning to give Kentucky a 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Ohio walked two Kentucky batters with the bases loaded, giving Kentucky a 6-0 lead going into the seventh inning.

SEC Pitcher of the Year Sean Hjelle threw seven scoreless innings before giving up a three-run homer in the eighth. His final stat line was 7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER and 3 strikeouts.

Ohio tacked on one-more run against closer Logan Salow in the top of the ninth. Salow recorded the save. Kentucky stays on the winners side of the bracket and will play the winner of Indiana/NC State tomorrow at 7 PM.
