The Impact of Knowing Shannon Dawson's Offense

Mark Stoops will be facing off against his former offensive coordinator, Shannon Dawson, on Saturday as UK opens the season against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

Dawson and Stoops decided after last season it would be best for the program if he was no longer the leader of the offense, so he announced he would not be coming back shortly following the loss to Louisville. Dawson then went and joined first-year head coach Jay Hopson’s staff, which had an explosive offense last season, scoring nearly 40 points per game.

Dawson inherits the best quarterback in C-USA, Nick Mullens, who threw for 4476 yards and 38 touchdowns last season. He will also be able to rely heavily on junior running back Ito Smith, who rushed for 1128 yards and touchdowns during his sophomore campaign.

Coach Stoops mentioned in his press conference today that his team has been watching film from last year’s offense, just to get a feel for what Dawson will do at Southern Miss. We discussed the impact of Kentucky knowing Dawson’s style heading into Saturday’s game.
