The Fast & The Furious | Cats outscore Hokies 93-86

It was expected to be a high-scoring game as Virginia Tech came in to Rupp Arena with the nation’s highest scoring offense to face a UK team that likes to get up and down the court and it did not disappoint.

The Kentucky defense could do very little in the first half to deter the Hokies as Virginia Tech shot 62% in the first half, including 7-12 from beyond the arc, as VT took a 46-41 lead into the break.

Many times Virginia Tech would take the ball into the paint for a short jumper or would kick it back out to the wing for a 3 point shot. UK was able to keep the game close by turning the Hokies over and scoring in transition. In all, 21 of UK’s 41 first half points came off of VT’s 11 first half turnovers.

Virginia Tech continued their hot shooting in the second half but UK tightened up their perimeter defense holding Virginia Tech scoreless from three point range until the end of the game.

Quade Green, playing in protective eyewear after injuring his eye in NYC agains Monmouth, scored 17 points and had 5 assists. Kevin Knox, held relatively in check in the first half, scored 15 second half points and finished with 21 for the game. Hamidou Diallo continued his hot shooting and finished with 20 points on 7-16 shooting.

In the post game press conference Coach Cal said “…if we didn’t turn them over we lose the game.” Virginia Tech finished with 19 turnovers. UK finished with 36 points scored off those 19 TO’s.

According to Cal the Wildcats get two days off, today and tomorrow, before the get back to practice. Kentucky’s next match-up is Saturday as UK takes on UCLA at the CBS Sports Classic on Saturday in New Orleans.
