For the second straight year, the Kentucky Wildcats were upset by the Tennessee Volunteers at Thompson-Boling arena.
The Volunteers (11-9, 4-4) handed the No. 4 Wildcats (17-3, 7-1) their first SEC loss of the season, winning 82-80.
Tennessee led for 30 minutes in the game. The Volunteers went into halftime with a 39-34 lead. Kentucky shot only 34% from the floor in the first half, including 15% from the three-point line.
The second half wasn’t much different. Tennessee maintained their lead throughout the second half, despite Kentucky’s efforts to come back towards the end.
Kentucky finished the game shooting 42% from the floor, 25% from the three and 77% from the free-throw line. Tennessee shot 47% overall and 50% from three. The Wildcats committed 14 turnovers to Tennessee’s nine.
Senior Robert Hubbs led Tennessee with 25 points on 9-14 shooting.
Malik Monk was Kentucky’s leading scorer, putting up 25 points (7-19 FG, 3-13 3P). But it was Bam Adebayo who had the biggest impact on the game. Adebayo finished the game with 21 points on 7-8 shooting, including scoring six straight points towards the end to cut Tennesee’s lead to 68-66 with 3:24 left in the game.
In the end, Tennessee out-hustled Kentucky when it mattered most and the Cats couldn’t do enough to come out with a victory in a tough road environment.
Kentucky will need to put this game behind them, as they face No. 2 Kansas on Saturday, who lost to No. 18 West Virginia earlier tonight. Tip is set for 6 pm at Rupp Arena.
Saturday should be fun.
