Position Preview: Young linebackers ready to prove themselves

08/10/2016 07:45 PM

We’re continuing our position preview by focusing on a young, inexperienced linebacker group. UK is replacing Josh Forrest at Middle Linebacker, the team’s leading tackler the past two seasons, along with Ryan Flannigan and Khalid Henderson, who both had over 50 tackles last year.

The Cats are calling on transfer Courtney Love to lead this young group at the middle linebacker spot. Starting at strongside linebacker is Sophomore Josh Allen, who had 4 tackles last season. Outside linebacker Denzil Ware is the one linebacker with a lot of game experience. He started 11 games last season as a freshman, making 39 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for a loss. Sophomore Jordan Jones, who had 10 tackles last season, is expected to start at weakside linebacker. Coach Stoops and Coach Eliot have both emphasized that redshirt Freshman Eli Brown is still giving Jones a run for his money, as he has impressed them through the first week of camp.

This group had 53 combined tackles between them last year—less than Josh Forrest had alone in 2015. We caught up with Josh Allen and Denzil Ware about their roles this season and what they see from Courtney Love’s leadership.
