NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — College basketball coaches can’t take a single step at the 2015 Nike Peach Jam tournament without bumping into at least one top-flight prep prospect.
But for John Calipari and the University of Kentucky, Arkansas shooting guard Malik Monk could be priority No. 1.
The five-star Bentonville native is the top-rated player at his position and No. 7 overall prospect in Scout.com’s Class of 2016 rankings and possibly the most exciting high school senior in America, too.
Monk dropped 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists in his Peach Jam debut on Thursday — a modest performance when compared to the 39 points, five assists, and four rebounds he posted in April at the Nike EYBL stop in Lexington, including a sizzling 6-8 shooting display from three-point range.
With fellow top-rated 2016 players Harry Giles (No. 1) and Jaysom Tatum (No. 3) potentially leaning towards a package deal to Duke, landing Monk would be an extraordinary consolation prize to headline John Calipari’s 2016 crop of new Cats.
Kyle Tucker of The Courier-Journal joined KSTV on Friday to discuss the importance of Monk’s recruitment for Calipari and UK, explaining why he could ultimately prove to be the gem of a loaded 2016 class.
