Let The Countdown Begin: Stoops' Troops Kick Off In 100 Days
05/22/2013 01:07 PM
Kentucky football stumbled their way through last season, but after firing Photoshop-happy Joker Phillips and hiring former Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, the future couldn’t look brighter for Wildcat football.
Stoops hauled in a top 30 recruiting class after being on the job less than four months, is on his way to topping that with the 2014 recruiting class, and picked up the tempo in spring practice. The team will need to build on the improvement from spring and fast, especially with the upcoming schedule.
Aug. 31: vs. Western Kentucky (Nashville)
Sept. 7: vs. Miami (Ohio)
Sept. 14: vs. Louisville
Sept. 28: vs. Florida
Oct. 5: at South Carolina
Oct. 12: vs. Alabama
Oct. 26: at Mississippi State
Nov. 2: vs. Alabama State
Nov. 9: vs. Missouri
Nov. 16: at Vanderbilt
Nov. 23: at Georgia
Nov. 30: vs. Tennessee
Next year’s schedule is grueling, especially the four game stretch of Louisville, Florida, South Carolina, and Alabama with just one bye week to rest. Unfortunately, the win column may not see much action, and the Cats will probably miss out on a bowl game. But Stoops cannot turn around the program in just one year, especially in the SEC facing a host of future NFL talent. The important thing will be keeping the games close when possible, not giving up, and showing signs of life. The quickest way to get better is the play against the best. Kentucky football has that chance week in and week out in the SEC, and Mark Stoops is instilling the mindset not to settle for being a bottom- or even middle-tier SEC team. He wants the Wildcats to compete at the top of the best football conference in the nation.
And it all begins with Western Kentucky August 31. Start the countdown!
