With UK preparing for the Big Blue Bahamas tour next month, John Rothstein from CBSSports.com got a chance to attend practice and get an inside look at the basketball team.
His write-up hit an a number of interesting topics about the current roster and its players, but the most fiery quote came from head coach John Calipari regarding Louisville.
“They were in two Final Fours and won a national title. They did exactly what we did. Not really, but almost,” Calipari said.
Coach Cal also discussed all the NBA rumors that took place this off-season and addressed why he ultimately stayed at UK.
Regarding a number of players decided to return, Cal said, “so now you have four kids who said they need us and me to prepare them for the rest of their lives. If I came back after that and left, it’s a tough move. That was solely the reason. Now people are saying that I’ll never leave here. You know what, maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll be in this position every year. I’ll be happy as hell if that happens, because that means my team comes back.”
Two of those players who opted to return to school were the Harrison twins. Much was expected of them as freshman a year ago, and tons of expectations will once again be on their shoulders during the 2014-15 season.
In talking about the twins’ improvements, Coach Cal said, “you think of those two in a two-hour practice, they have to make about 100 decisions, and so far 80 percent of them are right. They’re still going to do some things that aren’t right at the time, but now they have the experience and understanding of what it takes to play through things. They’ve been through a year of college basketball and that’s huge.”
With the current UK roster, Coach Cal will have a variety of lineups at his disposal. He can prioritize size, athleticism, experience or a number of other factors. As a result, he might employ more zone this season.
