CLEVELAND — The University of Kentucky’s Mitch Barnhart received the Under Armour AD of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) on Tuesday.
In total, the NACDA announced 28 winners from different divisions of collegiate athletics, and Barnhart was one of four recipients from the Football Bowl Subdivision along with TCU’s Chris Del Conte, Warde Manuel of UConn, and Baylor’s Ian McCaw.
NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione explained in a press release that the ADOY Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels, including their positive commitments and contributions to student-athletes, campuses, and their surrounding communities.
“Since 1998, NACDA has been highlighting the notable contributions made by athletics directors across all divisions of our membership,” said Vecchione. “These 28 winners have been recognized by their peers for their outstanding work on campus, in their community and supporting their student-athletes. We look forward to recognizing their significant achievements at our 50th Anniversary Convention this June.”
The headlining achievement of UK Athletics under Barnhart’s tutelage during the 2014-15 school year was the men’s basketball team’s completion of the first perfect regular season by a power conference team in 39 years in route to an NCAA record 38-0 start and second consecutive appearance in the Final Four.
Outside of basketball, many of the Kentucky’s other sports programs also enjoyed success over the same period as 18 of UK’s 22 varsity teams contributed to finishing 11th in the Director’s Cup standings last season — a new school record.
Barhart also improved the growth of the athletics department off the field by pursing facility improvements at Commonwealth Stadium and new practice facilities for the football, softball, soccer, and track teams.
