Over the course of a season that has seen his young team struggle on nearly every time out on the floor, John Calipari has been consistent in the message he’s preached to the team. For them to make a jump forward, they will have to do it together and each individual will have to play to their potential. On Sunday against Illinois-Chicago, the Cats got closer to that ideal than they have at any point this season.

UK raced out to a 52-35 halftime lead, thanks to a balanced scoring attack and Calipari’s willingness to let his group change defensive looks every couple of minutes. In the second half, it was much of the same story as UK used multiple defensive looks and high-percentage shots at the basket to shoot 66% for the game and walk away with a 107-73 win.

Kevin Knox was the high scorer with 25 points, but five other players also scored in double figures. Hamidou Diallo finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists, while PJ Washington added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists off the bench. Quade Green (12) and Nick Richards (11) also scored in double figures.
