On Friday, John Calipari said it would only be a big game for Kentucky if they won. After the final buzzer sounded, it might actually be much more than that.

The Cats traveled to West Virginia Saturday night to take on the seventh-ranked Mountaineers in their toughest challenge of the season and looked overwhelmed in the first half. Kentucky committed ten turnovers in the game’s first ten minutes, but still trailed by only 3 points. But West Virginia used the final ten minutes of the half to implement a grinding halfcourt game and led by as many as 17 points before taking a 48-33 lead into the half.

Though it appeared that a Kentucky team that had its toughness questioned numerous times this season was set for another week of soul-searching after a demoralizing road loss, John Calipari’s team came out as a different group in the second half. The Cats clamped down on defense, holding a WVU team that shot 47% in the first half to only 32% in the second half and, and found some consistency on offense. UK out-scored WVU 50-28 in the second half to walk away with a seven-point win.

Freshman Kevin Knox was the star of the game for Kentucky, scoring 34 points on 11 of 17 shooting and also grabbing 7 rebounds. Hamidou Diallo added 13 points, while Jarred Vanderbilt came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds.
