Kentucky holds off Vermont, 73-69

Just 48 hours after Utah Valley gave Kentucky a scare at Rupp Arena, Vermont came in and got even closer to knocking off the No. 5 Wildcats.

In an almost complete reversal of Friday night’s game with Utah Valley, where Kentucky trailed by nine at the half, Vermont did their damage in the final twelve minutes, overcoming a 12-point halftime deficit and making Kentucky work for a 73-69 win. The challenge from a veteran Vermont team was something John Calipari said his young team needs early in the year.

“We’re starting all freshmen, we bring in two sophomores who haven’t played that much, with a freshman off the bench,” Calipari said afterward. “You cannot play Popcorn State and learn anything. You got to play good teams.”

Freshman forward PJ Washington finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and Hamidou Diallo added 16 points. Quade Green (15) and Kevin Knox (11) also scored in double figures.

Kentucky returns to the floor Tuesday against Kansas in the Champions Classic. KSTV will be in Chicago and have much more on Monday’s show.
