One down. Five to go.
Karl-Anthony Towns stuffed the stat sheet with a career-high 21 points along with 11 rebounds and three blocks to help No. 1 Kentucky overcome a sluggish start to defeat No. 16 Hampton 79-56 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday night in Louisville.
The Pirates seized an early 5-4 lead and trailed 13-11 with 13:13 left to play in the first half, but UK (35-0) woke up with a 20-3 run to take a 41-22 advantage into intermission.
It was much of the same in the second half as the Wildcats held Hampton (17-18) to just 29% shooting and used a 38-25 rebounding advantage to control the game and cruise to an easy victory.
Senior guard Quinton Chievous posted a game-high 22 points for the Pirates in a losing effort despite playing with a sprained ankle injury he suffered in Hampton’s first-round victory over Manhattan on Tuesday night.
Next up for Kentucky is No. 8 seed Cincinnati on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. ET.
The Bearcats overcame a five-point deficit with under a minute to play in regulation against No. 9 Purdue before holding on in overtime for a 66-65 victory.
