When pressed earlier in the week on if he was telling his team that they could beat Alabama, Mark Stoops refused to bite, saying “You know what we’re up against.” And what they were up against is the nation’s top-ranked team, but the Cats showed fight and found themselves in a great position early in the game.
After forcing a turnover on downs on Alabama’s first possession, Kentucky marched down the field for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Crimson Tide fumbled on their next possession, giving the Cats the ball inside Alabama territory. But UK quarterback Stephen Johnson fumbled on third down, one of his three fumbles on the game, giving the ball back to the Crimson Tide. From there, it was all downhill for the Cats.
Behind quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who connected 11 times for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns, Alabama marched to a 34-6 win.
The Crimson Tide out-gained UK 488 to 161 for the game as the Cats struggled to find any consistency offensively against Alabama’s dominant defense.
UK quarterback Stephen Johnson finished the game 13 of 22 for 89 yards. Boom Williams (21) Benny Snell (38) and Jojo Kemp (39) combined for 98 yards on the ground. Garrett Johson was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 37 yards.
We’ll have more on KSTV Monday.
