Kentucky blows out Louisville, 90-61

The annual rivalry game between Kentucky and Louisville seemed to have a different feel in the week leading up to the game and it had a drastically different feel for the 40 minutes the teams were on the floor as the Wildcats blasted the Cardinals, 90-61.

Kentucky put a lot of emphasis on driving the ball at the rim the last few weeks and freshman guard Hamidou Diallo put that plan into action on the game’s first possession, driving to the lane and dunking on Louisville big man Anas Mahmoud. The teams would battle for much of the first half before Kentucky used a late run to enter the break with a 14-point lead at 41-27. And in the second half, it was all Kentucky.

The Cats were efficient on offense (48% on field goals, 47% from three) and aggressive on defense, turning Louisville into a team that often settled for jumpshots or looked disorganized on offense. The Cards went on to shoot 3-25 from three for the game and shot only 35% from the field for the game. They also lost the rebounding battle to Kentucky.

For the Cats, freshman Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came off the bench to score 24 points, to go with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. He was named MVP of the game by the Louisville Sports Commission after the game.
