After a two-week run that saw them win three games and take #4 Kansas to overtime in Lawrence, it seemed like the Kentucky Wildcats had turned a corner. And the questions about whether they could put a mediocre team away were all but forgotten. Until Tuesday night in Knoxville.
In what may be the most disappointing defeat of the season, the UK basketball team gave up a 21-point lead to a 10-11 Tennessee team and lost, 84-77.
Afterward, head coach John Calipari said, “We had them down 21, and they came back and beat our brains in. So you think about it. They end up beating us by 30 in about 25 minutes, and it could have been 50. So, we got a ways to go.”
Freshman Jamal Murray finished with 21 points (7-20 shooting), 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Tyler Ulis added 20 points and 5 assists. Alex Poythress finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds for Kentucky, which got almost nothing from their bench. Marcus Lee and Skal Labissiere combined for 4 points and 5 rebounds to go with 5 fouls in 31 minutes of play.
