“We’re not a good team right now.”
Those were the words uttered by UK coach John Calipari after his team finished off Division II Montevallo 95-73 Monday night at Rupp Arena. The Cats allowed the Falcons to shoot 59% from the field in the first half, despite entering the break with an 11-point lead and despite outscoring Montevallo 49-37 in the second half, Kentucky never seemed to hit their stride.
Freshman forward Julius Randle led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow freshman James Young added 16 points and 5 rebounds. But Young’s most memorable play came in the second half when he saved a blocked shot on the sideline and threw it back in bounds, only to have it land in the Falcons basket for two points.
Freshman guard Aaron Harrison finished with 10 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds, while Willie Cauley-Stein added 10 points. Senior Jarrod Polson, who earned the start at point guard, finished the game with 8 points and only 1 assist to his 3 turnovers.
