Leading up to Tuesday night’s game with Florida, there was a lot of talk about a “tweak” John Calipari was making to his team. The players wouldn’t say what it was, Calipari wouldn’t explain it and it wasn’t even clear afterward what the coach changed. But, whatever it was, it worked.
The Cats looked like a different group in their final road test of the season, attacking the basket on offense and fighting for rebounds and loose balls on defense. Freshman Skal Labissiere, who was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time since December 19, responded in a big way, picking up 6 points and 7 rebounds in the game’s first 9 minutes. The big man finished with 11 and 8 and, along with Alex Poythress’ 12 points and 10 boards, led a rejuvenated UK frontcourt.
Tyler Ulis scored 19 and handed out 11 assists, making him only the third player in UK history to top 200 assists in a season, while Jamal Murray scored 21 and grabbed 8 boards.
The Cats return home Saturday for a Senior Day battle with LSU.
