It wasn’t pretty, but No. 2 Kentucky hung on to beat No. 15 Northern Kentucky 79-70 to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

De’Aaron Fox led the way with 19 points (8-15 FG) and was aggressive early on. He was a big reason why Kentucky got off to a fast start. Isaiah Briscoe scored 17 points (7-11 FG) and grabbed eight rebounds. Bam Adebayo was a monster on the boards, grabbing 18 rebounds to go along with his 12 points.

It appeared early on that the Wildcats would blow the Norse away. That wasn’t the case, as Northern Kentucky stayed in the game, battling on the boards and bringing the physicality to Kentucky. The Wildcats led by as much as 18 points in the second half, but Northern Kentucky never gave up, coming within eight points with less than a minute left in the game.

Northern Kentucky’s Lavone Holland scored 22 points to lead the Norse. Freshman Carson Williams added 21 points and nine rebounds.

Kentucky will face Wichita State on Sunday at 2:40 pm. The last time the two teams met was in the 2014 NCAA tournament when the eighth-seeded Wildcats upset the top-seeded Shockers in the second round.
