The top-seeded Kentucky Wildcats took care of business this afternoon in the quarterfinals, beating Georgia 71-60.
This is Kentucky’s third win over Georgia this season and this one came much easier than the other two. The Wildcats used a fast start to take an early 10-2 lead. Georgia’s dynamic duo of J.J. Frazier and Yante Maten combined to score just one point through the first nine minutes of the game.
With Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo all on the bench with foul trouble to close out the half, Frazier fought to get the Bulldogs back in the game. He scored two quick buckets with less than two minutes in the first half to cut Kentucky’s lead to 28-22. The Cats were on their heels while Georgia was gaining momentum. But Isaiah Briscoe scored two layups in the final 35 seconds, including one at the buzzer, to give Kentucky a 32-25 lead at the half.
The Cats extended their lead to as many as 17 points three different times in the second half, ultimately winning by eleven.
Isaiah Briscoe and De’Aaron Fox led the way for the Wildcats. Briscoe had 20 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Fox finished with 20 points, four assists and three rebounds. Bam Adebayo recorded his team-high sixth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Derek Willis continued to battle down low. He had 11 rebounds and is now averaging 8.5 rebounds per game over the last four games. Malik Monk had his second straight rough outing. He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting.
Kentucky will face either Alabama or South Carolina in the semifinals tomorrow at 1 pm ET. That game will be televised on ESPN.
