LEXINGTON — UK Hoops Head Coach Matthew Mitchell made a surprising announcement Monday evening, confirming star junior Linnae Harper has decided to transfer from the program.
Harper, a 5-foot-8 guard from Chicago, played in 69 games during her UK career, including 17 starts, and was a member of the USA national team that won a silver medal at the Pan American Games this summer in Toronto Canada.
The 2013 McDonald’s All-American averaged 9.2 points per game for the Wildcats last season and was Kentucky’s leading returning rebounder this year at 7.1 boards per game.
Harper explained her decision to transfer with a post on her Twitter account:

In a press release, Mitchell said he wishes nothing but the best for Harper’s future:
- “Linnae has decided to leave our program and seek a transfer elsewhere,” Mitchell said in the release. “We appreciate everything Linnae gave our program in her two years here and we wish her nothing but the best on and off the court moving forward.”
UK Hoops will begin its 2015-16 season on Sunday, November 8, with an exhibition game against Union University in Lexington. The Wildcats return two starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament team — guards Janee Thompson and Makayla Epps.
- “I am very excited about the team that we have and the work we are putting in as the season nears,” Mitchell said. “We have another challenging schedule this season, especially in the non-conference, and it’s important we don’t waste any opportunity to improve this preseason as we head into our season opener vs. Rice.”
