Is Patrick Towles one of the top underclassmen QBs in the nation?

LEXINGTON — Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles showed flashes of greatness in 2014, using his dual-threat skill set to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 start before dropping the final six decisions of the season.
But despite the sour ending, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. was impressed by the sophomore’s performance — so much so that he included Towles on his list of the nation’s top-5 underclassmen signal callers on Tuesday.
“The numbers won’t jump out at you,” wrote Kiper Jr., “but the size (6-5, 241 pounds) and natural ability will. Don’t let that size make you think Towles lacks athleticism, either. The former high school high jumper can really move.
“With new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson’s arrival from West Virginia, there will be high expectations for this offense, and the return of four starters on the O-line will help.”
Here’s the rest of the top-5 underclassmen QBs:
- Jared Goff (Junior, California)
- Christian Hackenberg (Junior, Penn State)
- Cardale Jones (Junior, Ohio State)
- Gunner Kiel (Junior, Cincinnati)
KSTV discussed Towles’ progression as a quarterback on Tuesday’s show, deciding whether or not he really can grow to be one of the top signal callers in the entire country.
