Former Cat Jeff Sheppard Criticizes One-and-Done Rule, UK's NBA Focus

Former Wildcat Jeff Sheppard was among a handful of guest speakers at the annual UK Convention in Franklin, Ohio over the weekend. The 1998 Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four spoke with fans about his career and over the course of the session, took some questions about what he thinks of UK’s current staff and the success they’ve seen.

Sheppard was of course complimentary of what John Calipari has accomplished at UK, but criticized the one-and-done process and said he thinks UK fans have had to accept it, despite not liking it. He also explained that he is not a fan of the NBA-focus around the UK basketball program and he’s still more comfortable meeting with Rick Pitino than Calipari because when he was at UK, Cal was the enemy.

Wow! I always had high regard for Jeff Sheppard but after his statement about Pitino and UL my opinion has dropped. He can say what he wants but if I had to choose who I wanted as a friend or who I could trust it would not be Pitino.

Calipari won a title in three years it took Pitino 7 years to win one at UK. Pitino could still be at UK but he got greedy. I think Sheppard is too loyal Pitino who bolted for the money.

I didn’t see anything wrong with what Jeff said about being more compfortable talking with his old coach than UK’s present coach. I understand that he has loyalty to Pitino and unlike some other UK fans I don’t hate Pitino now although I was a bit upset that he came back to coach at UL but I got over that also. The OAD rule is a bad one and should be changed but as long as it is in place Cal will use it to his and UK’s advantage and rightfully so.
