John Calipari picked up his first commitment of the 2015 class today in the form of five-star shooting guard Charles Matthews, who picked the Cats over Illinois, Kansas, Michigan State and Marquette.
The 6’4” Chicago native made the announcement in front of his St. Rita’s classmates, saying that he had a gut feelinga bout Kentucky since he visited and that “it was kind of pointless beating around the bushes with the other coaches. Matthews, who played for the same Meanstreets AAU program as former Calipari stars Derrick Rose and Anthony Davis, was also a teammate of incoming UK point guard Tyler Ulis.
Here’s his announcement:
According to Scout.com, he 185-pound guard needs to improve his strength and his defense, but his biggest strengths are his mid-range game, his ability to create and his ballhandling. Those strengths were on full display this summer at the Nike Peach Jam when KSTV was on hand and we talked with Matthews afterward about his game.
