Through two weeks of play, Kentucky ranks 13th in the SEC in total offense. The Cats are averaging 279 yards and 21 points per game. They haven’t had success through the air lately. Since the first half of Southern Miss, Drew Barker has thrown for only 55 passing yards while throwing three interceptions. After practice Tuesday, Eddie Gran spoke about simplifying the offense and getting the team back to the basics.
“We’ve got to keep growing. We’ve got to grow fast,” said Gran. “Coach (Stoops) is talking about executing, simplifying it, playing fast and that’s what we’re doing.”
Kentucky’s simplified offense will debut against a New Mexico State defense that is allowing 34.5 points per game. The Aggies defense surrendered 427 yards per game through two weeks and has given up nine touchdowns. Their opponents are also averaging 5.9 yards per play, which will be nice for a Kentucky offense that only picked up 3.1 yards per play last weekend against Florida.
