It’s become almost expected for UK to have a handful of players in the NBA Draft each year, but in 2014 only two Cats entered. Julius Randle is projected to go in the back half of the top five picks, and James Young is slotted from the early to late teens.
Mike Schmitz from DraftExpress.com has analyzed both of their games. In Randle, he sees a bruiser that can immediately play at the NBA level. Young, on the other hand, has many facets of his playing style that need improvement, but he could have the most upside of all the shooting guards.
It came as a shock to many in Big Blue Nation when Willie Cauley-Stein, Dakari Johnson, the Harrison twins and others opted to return for another year at UK. Schmitz sees big time draft potential in a number of these prospects.
With all the returnees, the Cats’ newcomers often get lost in the discussion. But for Schmitz, Karl Towns projects as a potential top-five pick, Trey Lyles has good upside and Tyler Ullis could have a monstrous impact in Lexington.
